Prominent NY Democrat Held For Foreclosure Embezzlement

Law360, New York (May 6, 2013, 4:15 PM EDT) -- Brooklyn Democratic Sen. John L. Sampson, a lawyer and former top party leader in Albany who was placed at the heart of a casino bid-rigging scandal three years ago, was arrested Monday and charged with embezzling $440,000 in proceeds from property foreclosure sales to fund his political ambitions.

The 47-year-old Sampson's arrest comes after two other state lawmakers — Queens Sen. Malcolm Smith and Bronx Assemblyman Eric Stevenson, both Democrats — were arrested in early April for corruption in a federal dragnet that is rocking the state's legislature.
