Town Named For Jim Thorpe Fights To Keep Athlete's Remains

Law360, Philadelphia (May 10, 2013, 4:25 PM EDT) -- A Pennsylvania town named in honor of famed Native American sports star Jim Thorpe voted Thursday to appeal to the Third Circuit a federal judge’s decision clearing the way for the athlete’s remains to be returned to tribal lands in Oklahoma.

The Jim Thorpe Borough Council voted unanimously to move ahead with the appeal after a judge in Harrisburg ruled that the town qualified as a museum under the Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act, a 1990 federal law designed to aid Native American groups...
