Ex-Navy Engineer Cops To Heading $20M Kickback Scheme

Law360, Chicago (May 30, 2013, 6:25 PM EDT) -- A former naval engineer on Thursday pled guilty to his role as the mastermind of a 15-year bribery and kickback scheme involving Navy contracts that allegedly defrauded the federal government of as much as $20 million.

After originally vowing to fight the charges, Ralph Mariano, 55, changed his plea to guilty on counts of conspiracy, theft of government property and tax evasion during a hearing in Rhode Island federal court, according to a statement from U.S. Attorney Peter F. Neronha.
