Barnes & Noble Didn't Infringe Gift Card IP, Jury Says

Law360, New York (June 10, 2013, 2:47 PM EDT) -- A Texas federal jury found Friday that Barnes & Noble Inc. hadn't infringed a patent for gift card activation technology held by Alexsam Inc., rejecting the patent holder's allegations in the first of several upcoming trials against card-selling retailers.

Following a weeklong trial, seven jurors issued a verdict that the country's biggest bookseller didn't infringe Alexsam's U.S. Patent Number 6,189,787, which the company has also asserted against Best Buy Co. Inc., the Home Depot USA Inc. and several others.
