Life Partners Investors Denied Class Cert. In Settlement Suit

Law360, Chicago (July 10, 2013, 3:01 PM EDT) -- A Texas federal judge on Tuesday denied class certification to investors who claim Life Partners Inc. duped them into buying life settlements based on flawed predictions of life expectancy.

While U.S. District Judge Barbara M.G. Lynn’s order was filed under seal, Life Partners released excerpts from the decision in a statement on Wednesday. The judge said she was “highly skeptical” that the plaintiffs, relying mostly on hindsight, could convince a jury that the company’s medical consultant used an unreasonable method to chart life expectancy, according to...
