Sacred Heart Kickback Scheme Caused Deaths, Suit Says

Law360, New York (July 25, 2013, 5:33 PM EDT) -- The executives of Chicago’s Sacred Heart Hospital, along with four doctors, were sued Thursday in Illinois state court for the deaths of two patients that allegedly occurred after doctors performed unnecessary tracheotomies as part of an illegal kickback scheme targeting Medicare and Medicaid.

The estates of the two deceased patients sued Sacred Heart owner and CEO Edward J. Novak, Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer Roy M. Payawal, and physicians Venkateswara R. Kuchipudi, Percy Conrad May, Subrir Maitra and Shanin Moshiri. Criminal charges against the...
