Gmail Scans Are Ordinary Business Practices, Google Says

Law360, New York (July 30, 2013, 1:29 PM EDT) -- Google Inc. asked a California federal judge Monday to dismiss multidistrict litigation accusing it of illegally harvesting data from emails sent to Gmail addresses, arguing the alleged misconduct actually consists of common and reasonable business practices.

The company originally moved for dismissal of the case in June, but the plaintiffs replied that separate from the normal email processing for spam, viruses, spell checking, routing and delivery, storage and delivery, Google diverts emails to separate devices to extract the meaning, or “thought data,” from a message....
