418 Cos. Freed From Sweeping Asbestos MDL In Pa.

Law360, New York (August 27, 2013, 6:07 PM EDT) -- A Pennsylvania federal judge on Monday signed off on 418 motions to dismiss various shipowners and companies who were swept into a massive asbestos multidistrict litigation over alleged lung scarring in sailors because the court where the complaints were originally filed didn't have jurisdiction.

Monday's ruling was long-awaited by the defendants, who were originally sued in Ohio federal court in the mid-1980s and disputed the appropriateness of that court, but languished until their suits were consolidated into the MDL beginning in 1991. On Monday, U.S. District...
