$7B Antitrust Deal May Be Best Bet For Merchants: Expert

Law360, New York (August 29, 2013, 7:12 PM EDT) -- The proposed $7.25 billion antitrust settlement retailers have wrought from Visa Inc. and MasterCard Inc. over interchange fees may be a reasonable deal for the plaintiffs given the substantial risks of taking the case to trial, a court-appointed economics expert said Wednesday.

New York University professor Alan O. Sykes concluded that it was at best "highly uncertain" whether the plaintiffs would succeed and secure significant damages and injunctive relief if they continued to litigate their antitrust claims over the credit card giants' policies.
