Jury Opposes Workplace Use Of N-Word, Even Among Blacks

Law360, New York (September 3, 2013, 7:47 PM EDT) -- A black boss cannot get away with calling a black employee the n-word, a New York jury said Tuesday, ordering a Manhattan-based nonprofit and its founder to pay punitive damages.

An eight-person jury said Strive East Harlem Employment Services, a nonprofit that uses a tough-love approach to ready poor New York youth for the job market, should pay $5,000 in punitive damages to former employee Brandi Johnson.

The founder, Rob Carmona, should pay another $25,000, the jury said.
