Refinery Neighbors Earn Class Cert. In Shell Pollution Suit

Law360, New York (September 3, 2013, 6:57 PM EDT) -- An Illinois federal court granted class certification on Tuesday to a group of residents who alleged that Shell Oil and other owners and operators of Wood River Refinery let hazardous benzene contaminate their nearby properties and water supply.

Judge G. Patrick Murphy ruled that the residents have standing because chemical releases “unequivocally” happened and the residents have explained how those may have injured their health and lowered property values.
