Motorola, RIM Begin Mobile Phone Patent War

Law360, New York (February 19, 2008, 12:00 AM EST) -- Motorola Inc. and Research in Motion Ltd. began what could become a protracted patent battle on Saturday after negotiations over a cross-licensing agreement on several types of cell phone technologies fell through.

Motorola Inc. filed two lawsuits, one in the U.S. District for the Eastern District of Texas and another in the U.S. District Court for the District of Delaware.

The lawsuit in Texas accuses RIM of infringing on seven Motorola patents, including ones for a “pre-programmed call-back-number-determined alert” and “displaying a plurality of function indicators...
