Sony Vaio Buyers In Calif., NJ Win Cert. Over Defect Claims

Law360, New York (September 27, 2013, 2:49 PM EDT) -- A California judge on Wednesday certified two classes of New Jersey and California residents who claim Sony Electronics Inc. knowingly marketed and sold five versions of its Vaio brand laptops with defective touchpads, but sliced express warranty allegations.

In a heavily redacted order, U.S. District Court Judge Anthony J. Battaglia rejected Sony’s arguments that class treatment was inappropriate because of significant differences between the states’ laws that would prevent common questions of law from predominating.
