SSI Recipients Sue Bank In Frozen-Assets Case

Law360, New York (February 21, 2008, 12:00 AM EST) -- A judge has certified a class of thousands of Supplemental Security Income recipients in a case seeking to stop the Bank of America from freezing the accounts of customers receiving Social Security benefits.

Judge Charles Sifton of the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of New York granted the plaintiffs' motion Tuesday, certifying a class of more than 15,000 New York residents who receive electronically deposited Social Security benefits and who want an injunction protecting their accounts from debt collectors.
