Patent Trolls Draining Calif.'s Legal Coffers, Innovation

Law360, San Francisco (October 30, 2013, 9:18 PM EDT) -- Infringement suits by patent-holding companies are eating up an increasing share of California tech companies' legal budgets and risk driving tech startups out of business, experts told state legislators Wednesday during an informational meeting on so-called “patent trolls” at Google Inc.’s headquarters.

Although the median cost to fight a patent suit is $650,000, the tab can run much higher, and many of the biggest targets for patent-holding companies' infringement suits are California tech companies, Santa Clara University law professor Brian Love told the legislative panel. Apple...
