Rep. Frelinghuysen May Take Defense Appropriations Chair

Law360, New York (October 22, 2013, 3:58 PM EDT) -- Rep. Rodney Frelinghuysen, R-N.J., is next in line for the leadership post of the House defense appropriations subcommittee after the death of long-serving chairman Rep. Bill Young, R-Fla.

Young, 82, died Friday after having chaired the powerful defense budgeting committee since 1995. The new chairman must be appointed by House Appropriations chair Hal Rogers, R-Ky., and approved by the House Republican steering committee.

Yet subcommittee appointments typically place a strong emphasis on seniority, and Frelinghuysen is the longest-serving Republican among current members of the defense appropriations...
