Nike Escapes Oakley's Suit Over Pro Golfer Endorsement

Law360, Los Angeles (December 18, 2013, 9:15 PM EST) -- A California federal judge on Wednesday tossed Oakley Inc.’s suit alleging Nike Inc. tried to poach pro-golfer Rory McIlroy for a sponsorship deal, ruling Nike had reasonably relied on McIlroy’s agent when he told the company the athlete was free to make the deal.

U.S. District Judge James V. Selna granted Nike’s motion for summary judgment as to Oakley’s claim of intentional interference with contractual relations, holding that McIlroy’s agent Conor Ridge had told Nike that Oakley would not contest any deal with Nike.
