Calif. Plaintiffs Claim Title Insurers Fixed Rates

Law360, New York (March 13, 2008, 12:00 AM EDT) -- The title insurance industry took another hit on Tuesday, when a group of California plaintiffs filed a lawsuit alleging the companies conspired to set rates at supra-competitive prices and offered illegal kickbacks to middlemen.

The lawsuit, filed in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California, accuses a slew of title insurance companies of violating state and federal antitrust laws by agreeing to fix the price of title insurance. The suit seeks treble damages and injunctive relief.
