Judge Whittles Down Sony Data Breach Class Action

Law360, Los Angeles (January 21, 2014, 10:16 PM EST) -- A California federal judge on Tuesday eviscerated a proposed class action against Sony Corp. over a massive data breach in 2011, dismissing a majority of the plaintiffs' claims but leaving intact a handful of allegations brought under state consumer protection laws.

U.S. District Judge Anthony J. Battaglia granted Sony's motion to dismiss 43 of 51 claims of the plaintiffs' first amended class action complaint, including negligence, negligent misrepresentation, breach of contract and unjust enrichment claims brought under the laws of nine states.
