Ex-UCLA Player's Defamation Suit Against Time Revived

Law360, Los Angeles (March 11, 2014, 9:48 PM EDT) -- A California appeals court on Tuesday revived a former UCLA star's defamation suit against Time Inc. over a Sports Illustrated article, ruling that although the claims were based on First Amendment-protected activity, because the author possibly fabricated statements the player can sue for defamation.

In an unpublished opinion, a three-judge panel ruled that a lower court erred in dismissing Reeves Nelson's suit under California's law against lawsuits used to curtail First Amendment rights, or strategic lawsuits against public participation, known as the anti-SLAPP statute.
