Farmers Insurance Drops High-Profile Climate Change Suits

Law360, New York (June 4, 2014, 2:17 PM EDT) -- Illinois Farmers Insurance Co. has abandoned proposed class actions accusing scores of Illinois municipalities of doing little to prepare for climate change and avoid the storm losses its policyholders suffered, a company spokesman told Law360 on Wednesday.

Farmers is voluntarily dismissing the litigation in Illinois federal and state courts, where the insurer argued that the Illinois cities and counties' inadequate preparation for climate change were to blame for its policyholders' significant property and economic damage from heavy rainstorms in April 2013.
