Usher, HBO, Labels Settle 'Different Strokes' IP Claims

Law360, Los Angeles (December 23, 2014, 6:26 PM EST) -- Usher, HBO Films Inc. and a host of record labels including Universal Music Group, Warner Music Group and Sony Music Entertainment have settled a Illinois federal copyright infringement suit brought by the singer of the hit "Different Strokes" alleging they sampled the song without approval.

In two stipulations of dismissal, one filed on Monday and one on Tuesday, singer Syl Johnson and record label Twilight Records Inc. informed U.S. District Judge Joan B.
