YouTube User Data To Be Anonymous In Viacom Case

Law360, New York (July 15, 2008, 12:00 AM EDT) -- In an attempt to allay concerns over Internet privacy, YouTube Inc. has decided to keep individual users anonymous when it provides the site's viewership records to copyright holders in an ongoing $1 billion infringement suit.

YouTube said on Monday that it would substitute user IDs, Internet addresses and other modes of identification before turning over its database to Viacom Inc., which won a request for the data under a recent court order.
