DirecTV Takes $78.9M Hit In Patent Judgment

Law360, New York (June 26, 2006, 12:00 AM EDT) -- Optical network equipment maker Finisar Corporation has won $78.9 million in damages in its patent infringement case against satellite television company DirecTV Group Inc.

A jury in the U.S. District Court of the Eastern District of Texas ruled that DirecTV violated a patent for technology that transmits and broadcasts digital information to a wide base of subscribers. Finisar’s co-founder, Dr. Frank Levinson, filed the patent application in 1991, and received approval in 1995.
