Google Funds Typosquatting, Infringement: Study

Law360, New York (October 15, 2008, 12:00 AM EDT) -- Google Inc. not only assists so-called typosquatters’ trademark violations, but nets millions in ill-gotten gains through ad sales for more than 80 percent of the Web sites that capitalize on mistyped domain names, according to a study published Monday by a Harvard University professor.

Google’s AdSense advertising program is used by the overwhelming majority of typosquatting Web sites, which often generate revenue from ad space purchased by the very companies whose trademark rights they infringe, Benjamin Edelman reports in the McAfee Security Journal.
