DirecTV Accused Of Deducting Payments Without Consent

Law360, Washington (January 19, 2016, 6:02 PM EST) -- Satellite giant DirecTV LLC is violating federal law by deducting electronic payments from subscribers' bank accounts without providing customers a copy of any written authorization, according to a putative class action recently filed in Arizona federal court.

DirecTV's automatic withdrawals violated the Electronic Fund Transfer Act and were done without the knowledge of Rosario Torres, who was also making manual monthly payments for her subscription, according to Friday's complaint.

“At no time did plaintiff authorize defendant to make preauthorized electronic fund transfers as she believed her signature only constituted the first month’s payment,” the suit states.
