Sprouts' W2 Leak In Data-Phishing Scam Prompts Suit

Law360, Los Angeles (April 21, 2016, 8:02 PM EDT) -- Sprouts Farmers Market Inc. was sued in California federal court Wednesday by a proposed class of current and former employees who say the grocery chain negligently released sensitive data, including their W2 forms and Social Security numbers, after falling prey to a data-phishing scam.

The suit relates to an incident around the week of March 14 when Sprouts compiled and sent off all of its approximately 21,000 employees’ 2015 W2 forms to an unknown party, not realizing the request was part of a data-phishing scam that could compromise employees’ private information through potential identity theft.
