Apple Launches Antitrust Suit Over Nokia Standard Patents
By Kevin Penton (December 21, 2016, 5:20 PM EST) -- Apple Inc. filed an antitrust complaint on Tuesday against Acacia Research Corp. and Conversant Intellectual Property Management Inc., accusing the major patent licensing firms of colluding with Nokia Corp. to extort exorbitant fees from technology companies for scores of standard essential cellular patents.
Apple claims that Acacia and Conversant violate federal and California state competition laws through their coordinated practice of seeking excessive royalty payments and engaging in multiple patent litigation, all as part of a broader "scheme to exploit" and create market power through the diffusion and dispersal of Nokia's patents, according to its complaint.
