Punitives Phase Begins In Engle Trial Against PM, RJR

Law360, New York (February 16, 2017, 10:17 PM EST) -- The family of a smoker who died in 1995 began a trial for punitive damages on Thursday against Philip Morris USA and R.J. Reynolds after being awarded millions of dollars in compensatory damages on Wednesday.

The husband, daughter, and son of Joyce Brown were each awarded $1.8 million on Wednesday by a Florida jury. However, the jury found that Brown was 30 percent responsible for the lung cancer that killed her in 1995. It assigned 35 percent responsibility to each of the two companies and also...
