Roku, TiVo Partner In Licensing Deal For Patent Trove

By Nicole Narea (April 12, 2017, 10:03 PM EDT) -- Media-streaming service Roku announced a multiyear intellectual property licensing deal Wednesday with TiVo that will grant it access to thousands of TiVo patents and company metadata.

The agreement merges the patent portfolios of TiVo Corp. and Rovi Corp., totaling some 6,000 issued and pending patents. Under the deal, Roku Inc. will also have access to Internet media streaming tools, also known as over-the-top assets, that TiVo obtained in a licensing partnership with patent-holding company Intellectual Ventures, as well as TiVo metadata that will improve "intuitive search and navigation" functions on consumer electronics, TiVo said in a statement.
