Hearst Class Cert. Denial May Dry Up Flood Of Intern Suits

Law360, New York (May 9, 2013, 7:27 PM EDT) -- A recent ruling denying class certification to unpaid interns bringing state wage law claims in a high-profile lawsuit against Hearst Corp. may stem the tide of litigation over internship programs, attorneys said Thursday, but they cautioned that employers using interns must still structure their programs carefully to avoid getting hit with costly suits. 

U.S. District Judge Harold Baer on Wednesday denied the plaintiffs' motion to certify a class of New York-based Hearst interns that would have stretched back to 2006 to bring New York Labor Law claims, and also denied them partial summary judgment on the question of whether they qualified...
