Jury Hits AutoZone With $185M Verdict In Pregnancy Bias Row

Law360, New York (November 18, 2014, 10:43 AM EST) -- A California federal jury on Monday awarded a record $185 million in punitive damages to a former AutoZone Stores Inc. manager who alleged she was fired after complaining that she was demoted after giving birth.

Lawrance A. Bohm of Bohm Law Group, a lawyer representing plaintiff Rosario Juarez, told Law360 Tuesday that the jury awarded more than the requested award of $160 million. On Friday, the jury also awarded Juarez over $872,000 in compensatory damages after finding AutoZone’s alleged gender discrimination to be malicious. He said the award is a new record for a single employee.
