Law360, New York (April 1, 2013, 7:56 PM EDT) -- Monday's Second Circuit ruling backing the legality of streaming TV service Aereo Inc. will set off a pitched battle in the TV industry as cable companies seek to use the ruling to avoid paying for network shows, attorneys say, and broadcasters are likely to press their copyright case to the U.S. Supreme Court.

The appeals court held that by making network TV shows available to its subscribers online, Aereo is not engaged in a public performance that can infringe copyright and does not need to pay broadcasters a retransmission fee.
