FCC Member Urges Incentive Auction For Education Spectrum

Law360, Washington (January 15, 2019, 4:23 PM EST) -- A Democratic member of the Federal Communications Commission made a case Tuesday for consolidating and auctioning off dormant spectrum licenses held by educational institutions, saying the revenue generated by a sale could fund projects to increase broadband access in students' schools and homes.

Commissioner Jessica Rosenworcel said that as the FCC seeks to both free up more funds for rural broadband expansion and distribute more of the airwaves to the private sector for 5G mobile services,  auctioning off underused licenses in the 2.5 GHz band makes perfect sense.
