Attys Cheer Iancu Patent Troll Speech, Tech Groups Dismayed

By Ryan Davis (October 22, 2018, 10:01 PM EDT) -- U.S. Patent and Trademark Office Director Andrei Iancu's speech arguing that decrying patent trolls weakens the patent system has been welcomed by attorneys and inventor groups for its defense of patent owners, while tech groups say it ignores the harm of abusive patent litigation.

In a speech to the Eastern District of Texas Bar Association on Thursday, Iancu said that the "patent troll narrative" that nonpracticing entities aggressively use weak patents to target successful companies is discouraging innovation by casting patents in a bad light.
