Smuggler Behind Wheel In Fatal Crash Gets 22 Years

Law360 (May 21, 2019, 4:27 PM EDT) -- The alleged ringleader of a smuggling operation who crashed a vehicle carrying 13 undocumented immigrants, killing two, was sentenced by a federal judge in Texas on Tuesday to nearly 22 years in prison.

U.S. District Court Judge Randy Crane sentenced 26-year-old Osvaldo Gonzalez to 262 months in federal prison and ordered Gonzalez, who goes by Chavelo, to pay $6,800 in restitution to the family of one victim. After he serves his prison time, Gonzlaez will be on probation for three years.

Prosecutors had claimed Gonzalez was the leader of a group of individuals that smuggled undocumented immigrants into the United States....
