Cambodian Woman Gets $1.78M Verdict In Forced Labor Suit

By Mike Curley (April 11, 2022, 6:03 PM EDT) -- A Texas federal jury on Monday awarded $1.78 million to a Cambodian woman who accused a couple of illegally bringing her to the U.S., then forcing her to work at their donut shop and in their home for around $2 a day.

At the close of a trial that started last week, the jury found that Matthew and Sopheak Otero had forced Sophy Treadway to work for them as a way to pay off her "debt" incurred by them paying for her to come to the United States.
