Ill. Hospital Hit With $1.1M Verdict Over Patient Death

Law360 (June 7, 2021, 5:54 PM EDT) -- An Illinois jury has awarded a $1.1 million verdict to the family of a 75-year-old man who died following a procedure at OSF St. Anthony Medical Center, closing out a trial that had been delayed for eight months as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The jury awarded Carol Powder, wife of Lawrence Powder, $900,000 for loss of society and $200,000 for grief, sorrow and mental suffering, according to the verdict sheet filed Friday. Attorneys for Powder's estate said this was the first civil jury verdict in Winnebago County in 16 months because of the pandemic.
