NY Wants $9M Damages Doubled In UPS Cigarette Ship Case

By Joshua Rosenberg (March 29, 2018, 8:21 PM EDT) -- The United Parcel Service Inc. should pay double the more than $9 million in damages originally awarded to the state and city of New York for unpaid taxes from illegal shipments of cigarettes, the city and state argued in a Second Circuit brief filed Wednesday.

The idea that UPS should only be liable for a fraction of the unpaid cigarette taxes, made possible by its shipment of such products, runs counter to the letter and spirit of laws designed to hold bad actors accountable, the brief stated.
