Hearst Inks Record $50M Pact To End Mich. Video Privacy Row
By Allison Grande (July 12, 2018, 9:52 PM EDT) -- Hearst Communications Inc. has agreed to pay $50 million to put to bed a putative class action in New York federal court accusing the media giant of flouting Michigan's video privacy law by selling customers' subscription information, a deal that the lead plaintiff said Thursday would more than triple the largest-ever settlement reached over alleged violations of the statute.
The parties' dispute dates back to 2015, when Good Housekeeping subscriber Josephine James Edwards sued the magazine's publisher, Hearst, over its alleged sale of vast troves of subscriber information to third-party data-minining companies without consent.
