Appeals Court Sides With Showtime In Cayuga 'Billions' Suit

By Emma Whitford (February 24, 2021, 6:15 PM EST) -- A New York state appellate panel has affirmed a lower court's dismissal of a defamation suit by the Cayuga Nation and one of its council members over what they called a negative portrayal of the official in an episode of Showtime's fictional show "Billions."

The four-justice panel agreed with New York Supreme Court Justice Kathryn E. Freed, who ruled in July that the tribe and council member Clint Halftown had failed to show that a "Billions" character named Jane Halftown, featured in a May 2019 episode of the hit series' fourth season, was based closely enough on him.
