Judge Bans Deal Between Hearst, MediaNews

Law360 (November 29, 2006, 12:00 AM EST) -- Fearing a potential newspaper alliance may violate antitrust laws, a federal judge has temporarily barred Hearst Corp., the owner of the San Francisco Chronicle, from consolidating some of its businesses with MediaNews Group Inc.’s newspapers.

U.S. Judge Susan Illston thwarted the deal Tuesday in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California after reading a previously undisclosed memo that said New York-based Hearst planned to work closely with its competitors on distribution and national advertising sales in the Bay Area.
