RealNetworks Agrees To Kill DVD-Copying Program

Law360, New York (March 4, 2010, 12:33 PM EST) -- RealNetworks Inc. has ended a declaratory copyright crusade against Sony Pictures Entertainment Inc. and other major movie studios, agreeing to pay $4.5 million as part of a deal that puts the kibosh on its DVD-copying program.

Judge Marilyn H. Patel of the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California on Wednesday approved the settlement between RealNetworks and the studios, Viacom Inc. and the DVD Copy Control Association Inc. The deal permanently enjoins RealNetworks from distributing or supporting its RealDVD copying program.
