SEC Takes Big Gamble With Goldman Suit

Law360, New York (April 16, 2010, 7:16 PM EDT) -- The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission's Structured and New Products Unit made a big and potentially fraught bet in filing its first enforcement action against Goldman Sachs Group Inc. on Friday, particularly as the commission attempts to rebuild its credibility after a series of embarrassing blunders.

If the unit, a part of the commission's Enforcement Division, is able to take down the biggest, baddest bank on Wall Street on fraud claims, it will send a clear signal to the rest of the multibillion-dollar structured finance sector....
