Scalia Stays $270M Judgment In La. Smoking Suit

Law360, New York (September 15, 2010, 11:39 AM EDT) -- U.S. Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia has temporarily stayed a Louisiana court order requiring tobacco giants including Philip Morris USA to pay $270 million to fund a 10-year smoking cessation program.

In a brief order issued Tuesday, Justice Scalia halted the April judgment from Louisiana's Fourth Circuit Court of Appeal until the high court receives a response from the plaintiffs, which is due Sept. 21.
