MDL Panel Keeps Quaker Trans Fat Actions Separate

Law360, New York (April 8, 2011, 6:22 PM EDT) -- The U.S. Judicial Panel on Multidistrict Litigation refused Friday to consolidate four putative class actions in California and one in Illinois accusing Quaker Oats Co. of falsely marketing its products as healthful when they contain artificial trans fats.

Because four of the cases are already under way as related actions in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California, an MDL would not necessarily be more convenient for the parties or more efficient than allowing the cases to proceed separately, the panel said....
