Feds Snare 7 In $14M Online 'Click Hijacking' Scheme

Law360, New York (November 9, 2011, 5:48 PM EST) -- In a case that federal prosecutors are calling the first of its kind, seven people have been accused of hatching a $14 million Internet advertising scheme that infected millions of computers with a potent computer virus, according to an indictment unsealed Wednesday.

Six Estonians and one Russian were snared in a “click hijacking” scheme, which used malicious software to redirect Internet users to unwanted websites, earning the defendants ad-brokering fees for each fraudulent click, U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York Preet Bharara says....
