CNN Tells 9th Circ. Closed-Captioning Violates Free Speech

Law360, San Francisco (March 11, 2013, 6:20 PM EDT) -- Requiring CNN to provide closed-captioning for every video clip on its website will make its reporting slower, more expensive and less accurate, violating its First Amendment rights, the network argued Monday, urging the Ninth Circuit to reverse a lower court win for disability rights advocates.

The Greater Los Angeles Agency on Deafness unfairly singled out CNN at a time when the Federal Communications Commission was crafting new regulations for closed-captioning online video programming, CNN's attorney Thomas Burke of Davis Wright Tremaine LLP told a three-judge panel....
