EU High Court Backs Free World Cup TV Broadcasts

Law360, New York (July 18, 2013, 12:40 PM EDT) -- The European Union's highest court on Thursday blocked a bid by soccer governing body FIFA to put World Cup matches on paid television, ruling that EU member states may require that all tournament matches be broadcast on free television channels.

The European Court of Justice dismissed appeals from FIFA as well as UEFA, which oversees the European Football Championship, that challenged the legality of U.K. and Belgium mandates that require matches be made available in those countries on free television.
