Medical Co. Owner Admits To $2.6M Medicare Fraud Scheme

Law360, New York (August 26, 2013, 6:48 PM EDT) -- The former owner of a Southern California medical equipment supply company pled guilty Monday to providing medically unnecessary power wheelchairs and other medical equipment to Medicare patients in a $2.6 million fraud scheme, federal prosecutors said.

Akinola Afolabi, 54, pled guilty to one count of health care fraud before U.S. District Judge Philip S. Gutierrez in Los Angeles, the latest scheme taken down by the inter-agency Medicare Fraud Strike Force. He had initially pled not guilty in May, according to court documents.
